What street do you live on? Is it named for an early Naugatuck Family,
a famous citizen, a war hero or another town? Street names are acquired
for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is a location, such as Main
St., West St., or it may be named after an aspect of nature, such
as Fern St. or Oak St. Many times the street is named after the
family that settled a particular part of town. Or in the case of
Rubber Avenue, an industry that flourished on that street.
There are at least 40 streets in Naugatuck that bears the surname
of a prominent citizen from the annals of Naugatuck History. Take
for instance Dunn Avenue, which is located on the West Side of town
and runs from Millville Avenue. Down to Highland Lane. It was opened
in 1897 to housing by Jeremiah Dunn, a prominent citizen and a mason.
Mr. Dunn was responsible for the yellow brick road surrounding Hillside
Middle School (formerly Naugatuck High School) built in 1905. He
was also responsible for building the beautiful Congregational Parish
House. A detailed biography of Mr. Dunn is available in the reference
room of the museum.
Research is now going on at the museum of the street names in Naugatuck.
